Gift Establishes New Scholarship

The Gift
A planned gift to establish an undergraduate scholarship in public service

Who gave it and why
Elaine M. Sudanowicz ’78
Boston State College

What if Hurricane Sandy had veered slightly to the north, causing a surging sea to submerge Boston? What if a tornado suddenly ripped through the downtown areas of the city? Elaine Sudanowicz, whose job as an interagency coordinator in Boston’s Office of Emergency Management, is to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on the
city, spends a good part of each day imagining “what if ” scenarios such as these.

A public servant for all of her professional life, Sudanowicz learned meteorology and geography at Boston State College. The college also instilled in her “the value of using knowledge for the public good,” she says. It empowered her to engage with the community in places like Dorchester, where she mentored middle schoolers, and Washington, DC, where she interned during her senior year.

Why it matters for UMass Boston

“When Boston State College merged with UMass Boston, the full strength of both institutions converged, creating a powerhouse of public education,” Sudanowicz says. Her generous gift will help put the university’s remarkable resources at the disposal of students who are preparing for careers in public service.
