Alumni Association Helps Boston Marathon Victims

The University of Massachusetts Boston Alumni Association joins our community in mourning the events of the past week.

Marathon Monday began with crisp blue skies and cool temperatures, creating ideal “runner’s weather” for the thousands of men and women who run 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston every year. It ended with shock, horror, and the loss of three innocent lives, with hundreds of others injured.

Marathon memorialFor those of us watching—taking for granted our happy, carefree day out in the open, cheering on our friends, family, and co-workers—the day ended in disbelief. We watched heroic acts by the men and women who ran toward the horror, comforting the injured, saving lives, doing what they always do. The community owes them our deepest gratitude.

Tuesday morning, though still in shock, our anger started to build. Rather than have those with such evil in their hearts get the better of us, we picked up the pieces and started to look around at our community to see how we could help.

By Friday evening, an enormous and impressive collaboration by local, state, and federal law enforcement brought us a much-needed conclusion: They had killed one suspect and captured the second.

As the University of Massachusetts Boston community goes to work today – staff, faculty, students and alumni – our Alumni Association feels compelled to do something tangible as we hold close in our hearts those killed and injured on Marathon Monday. Our contribution to the One Fund Boston [www.onefundboston.org] is a small way to do that.

Your contributions as individual alumni will strengthen that effort. Please join us in giving generously.

Slowly, but surely, we will heal. But we will never forget.
