« BackBoard of Visitors Hosts First University State House Showcase
On February 5, 2013 a delegation acting as ambassadors for the University of Massachusetts Boston convened at the State House on Beacon Hill as guests of the Boston Delegation of the Massachusetts Legislature, as well as other legislators who are UMass graduates.
Chancellor Motley spoke, highlighting the university’s strategic mission and progress on the campus master plan. Student and alumni participants had an opportunity to connect with legislators and demonstrate the increasing involvement of UMass Boston alumni to promote the university's growth and student success, which have been strengthened through the Alumni Association's recent $1 million pledge.
The event included networking with legislators and brief presentations to highlight the university's teaching, research, and students. The Board of Visitor's Marketing and Government Relations committee plans to make the event annual to continue to advocate for public higher education in the Commonwealth generally and UMass Boston in particular.
Marijo McCarthy, president of the Alumni Association board and a Board of Visitors member, said, "this was a terrific marketing event, exposing the powerful message of alumni supporting our university to a constituency who needs to hear and absorb it … again and again and again. We can’t let President Caret and Chancellor Motley be the sole voices crying in the wilderness." She believes the event stepped up the university's efforts help to build powerful alliances that will serve the university for years to come.
